Research and Programmatic Interests
My research agenda is built around three main interest areas:
1. Parent involvement in the education and emotional lives of youth, such as: Latino parent involvement in academics; Neighborhood and family predictors of academic success; Similarities between the educational aspirations of Latino parents and youth; Family cohesion as a resource for Latino families.
2. Effectively serving and engaging diverse communities, such as: Community engagement through Latino cultural events; Effectively serving minority fathers; Community supports for child care provision, health and safety for Latino families.
3. Fatherhood, such as: How ethnically diverse fathers matter to their kids; Latino fatherhood on both sides of the Mexico-US border; Immigration and fatherhood
I have focused on assessing the needs of Latino parents, and investigating with local partners how to fill gaps in services to these families. My work connects extension agents with other Latino serving partners to program together, while studying the effectiveness of said programs. I have created brochures, leaflets, and DVDs to connect Latino parents with services and to encourage parents to volunteer in the betterment of their communities. My life mission is bringing better attention to those factors that help immigrant Latino families succeed and thrive in the U.S.
I also conduct in-service training for agents and other interest groups in effective strategies and practices for helping Latino families. These trainings are based on the needs expressed by partners in the field and have been transformed into publications and teaching materials to be used by collaborators and colleagues. Other training include: health and financial implications for Latino families, immigration policy and family impacts, how to effectively collaborate with local Latino-serving organizations to serve Latino families, how to involve parents in their children’s education, and how to raise academically successful children.
